Follow my blog with Bloglovin

I noticed that a lot of the blogs I visited for Giveaway Day had links to follow them on Bloglovin', which seems to be the choice for replacing Google Reader, so I'm giving it a try-out too. So far it seems to be a convenient way to keep up with the blogs I follow by RSS feed. I'm still learning how the various features work.

Pros:
  • I was able to easily import most of the subscriptions I follow from Google Reader.
  • The Android app seems to work pretty well
  • Adding a new blog to follow was easy
  • Firefox extension adds a button to my browser tool bar for notifications
Cons:
  • Some of the blog feeds didn't transfer - most were not updated recently
  • Somehow the news feed for the Yankees was imported instead my NY Mets! With a little trial and error, I was able to figure out how to add the Mets and unfollow the Yankees feed.

I'm also giving Netvibes a try-out. At first, I couldn't create a new account, because it told me my user name and email address were already in use. When I used the password reset link and logged in, I found out that my really old Bloglines account had been transferred to Netvibes. I'm using the free version.

Pros:
  • I was able to easily import most of the subscriptions I follow from Google Reader.
  • News feeds can be read either in widgets view on a dashboard or reader (list) view, which feels a lot like Google Reader

Cons:
  • No mobile app that I could find. There is a mobile web site, but I found the text too small on my phone to want to read my feeds that way.
  • Some of the blog feeds didn't transfer - most were not updated recently

In the course of importing news feeds into both services, I deleted some that were inactive for a year and more. I also deleted some of the feeds if I follow them on Facebook.

So far, I like each of the applications for different reasons, so I'll probably give them a try-out for a few months before deciding whether to keep one or the other - or both! I may update the pros and cons above as time goes by and I have a chance to explore all the various features.
