Joseph's First Birthday - Soft Book
Nephew (#12) Joseph's 1st birthday was earlier this month. I planned to make this soft book plus a few other items . . . I managed to finish the book, but since Penny has come to stay with us, my sewing time has been somewhat limited so I'll have to make the other items sometime in the future.
The whale design on the front cover is from A Baby Nursery Design Pack-small, the six applique designs on the inside pages of the book are from A Sea Life Appliqué pack, both from Embroidery Library. The lettering was done by me using 4D Professional Embroidery software (the names come from the Embroidery Library instruction sheet -- I'm not that creative to come up with such clever names!). I assembled the pages in almost the same way I put together Ryan's Kooky Monsters soft book in January, another Embroidery Library inspired project.
I machine embroidered the appliqué designs on quilter's flannel using a medium weight cutaway stabilizer. Most of the appliqués were made from fabric scraps of flannel, fleece and batik cottons.
The individual pages were sewn together, then assembled as a "book" by inserting two eyelets per page and tying them up with a scrap of flannel. If I'd planned ahead better, I would have preferred to use a colorful shoelace, but the flannel strip will do for now.
I made a similar book for a different nephew last spring. I prefer the more recent method of assembling the book; it's easier to line up the pages and we can add more pages in the future if needed.
